Memento Mori

A charming fellow I met at a museum on a recent (research!) trip to Prague. I believe it was originally a sign outside an apothecary shop. His note reads “Recipe: Contra vim mortis non est medicamen en hortis.” Which translates to “There is no cure in the garden against the force of death.”

Happy Halloween! 🧙‍♀️🍄🕸👻💀

The Raven Song Is Out!

The Raven Song has enjoyed a wonderful launch week thanks to readers! Heartfelt thanks to all who downloaded or preordered the second book in The Conspiracy of Magic series. This was one of those books that had a tough road to publication due to the demands of caring for an elderly family member while trying to deliver a follow-up manuscript under a quick deadline. The two ended up colliding together like a car wreck with me smashed in the middle. But all that chaotic effort seems miles away in retrospect, now that the book is in the hands of readers. I hope you enjoy the continuation of Edwina and Ian’s story. Happy autumn reading!

Some Praise for The Raven Song...

Thanks to Booklist, a publication of the American Library Association, for this kind review for The Raven Song. Book Two in The Conspiracy of Magic series publishes on October 11th! Get your copy on Amazon. Paperback copies can be also be found on BarnesandNoble.com and Target.com.

“Stunned by her sister Mary’s sudden death at the end of The Raven Spell (2022), Edwina Blackwood is forced to retreat from London when a stalker magically destroys her shop. Even her departure from London is threatened when their train tickets are pickpocketed from her love interest, Ian Cameron, and they resort to the witches’ safe house and a magical train to reach Sir Henry Elvanfoot’s home in the north. Thinking themselves safe, Edwina and Ian relax as the witches and fair folk prepare for the Gathering, a celebration of Midsummer, and Edwina explores her increasing abilities with fewer restrictions than in London. As Ian investigates something sneaking through the veil between the mortal and fairy worlds, he finds increasingly disturbing connections between his work and Edwina’s stalker, and runs afoul of his employer who mistakenly thinks he’s hindering the fair folk. The surprises about both characters and the setting throughout this story will delight readers as Smith continues to skillfully play with folklore in this charming series.”

New Books Coming!

Just a quick update to let interested readers know I’ve recently signed a two-book deal with 47North/Amazon for a new historical fantasy series. The first book is tentatively titled The League of Shadows. The story is set during WW1 on the Eastern Front. In it, a young witch gets recruited to join a small band of sorcerers and soldiers tasked with stopping an outbreak of supernatural creatures awakened by the bloodshed of war in the Carpathian Mountains.

Small tease: a character from The Conjurer makes an appearance in the story. I’m currently writing the first book in the series and when I have a better idea of the release date, I’ll post it here.
